Every day at 10 PM, I sit in front of my computer, looking at a blank sheet where I’m supposed to write something – anything that I like or love, which I can share with the world. This is my everyday scene. I struggle to get a topic to write about. I’m a new writer, so I haven’t found my routine yet. I know great writers have a routine or list of tasks to be done to write, like research, planning, and outlines. I don’t have anything like that. All I know is I want to write, and I want to share it with the world.
Today, while looking at the blank sheet, it struck me – I’m not the only person like this. There must be thousands like me, staring at a blank sheet, wondering what to write, and if they’ve taken a bad decision by becoming a writer.
So, I decided to write a list of things I should remember, which will help me and others like me in this journey.
Here are a few things you should know, which I believe will help you:
- Every writer will have a block – not knowing what to write, especially new writers like us. So, take your time, read good books, and good articles from great writers. Take motivation from these, and look out for ideas.
- Even if you’re not posting every day, just write every day. It doesn’t matter what you write or when you write it – just write. Writing more will give you ideas, and the more you write, the more you’ll know your style.
- Don’t compare your writing to great writers’ work and worry why you’re not getting views or likes. Every great writer was once an amateur, and they kept writing. One day, some new writer will take inspiration from your journey to never give up. So, never give up.
- Don’t burden your brain with demands. Yes, don’t ask your brain to write a masterpiece when you haven’t given it much rest and exercise. When you know you can’t write, get away from the sheet and go for a walk or do something else other than writing.
- As new writers, our goal must be to become good or excellent writers. Money follows good work. So, hone your craft, and the rest will follow.
- Engage with genuine writers – ask for help. Almost everyone will be kind enough to point out some mistakes or things you can do better if you ask them politely.
- One thing that bugs great or accomplished writers is when a new writer, who is barely out of diapers in the writing world, gives advice on writing. We are new writers; unless you have more than 100 followers genuinely for your writing, avoid writing blogs advising how to write and how to earn. (This is not a “how to write better” or “earn more” blog; these are my thoughts on how new writers should see the craft.)
- Don’t worry if your blog isn’t getting traction. Patience plays a vital role in a writer’s life. You have to be patient to write a good article, and you should be patient to give your writings and your consistency time to work.
- Be nice to other new writers – it’s crazy to expect someone to like and share your work but not look at other new writers’ work. Like us, they also need help. So, let’s help each other.
- Remember this – the world doesn’t owe you anything. It’s all transactional. If you bring value to this world with your work, the world will give value to your efforts.
There are many good writers who are new, but that doesn’t mean all new writers are good. Instead of worrying about it, we can all learn and grow together. Feel free to add any more points in the comments that you believe will help a new writer. I’m looking forward to all your help.
