The Yacht I Never Rented: A Lesson in Success and Happiness

A majestic pirate ship sails into the serene waters at sunset, casting a dramatic silhouette.

A few years ago, I found myself standing on the shore of a foreign land, gazing at the endless blue of the ocean. The sun was setting, casting golden hues over the waves as luxury yachts sailed by. Music echoed from their decks—people were dancing, laughing, and celebrating life. As I stood there, I thought to myself, One day, when I have enough money, I will do that too. I will rent a yacht, gather my family and friends, and sail away into happiness.

Fast forward to today. Life has changed, and I now earn enough to afford that very experience. If I wanted to, I could book a yacht tomorrow, but here’s the surprising truth—I don’t think I ever will.

That realization led me to a profound understanding of my own thoughts:

  1. I never truly wanted to sail on a yacht. What I really wanted was the option to do so. I desired the sense of financial freedom, the feeling that I could afford luxury if I chose to.
  2. It wasn’t about partying or the open ocean. What I actually longed for was a moment where I felt secure enough to let go of worries, to escape from everyday struggles, and to simply be free.
  3. My happiness was never tied to a specific event or possession. I once thought that sailing with my loved ones would bring me joy, but what truly makes me happy is the ability to provide for them—to give them comfort, security, and experiences that make their lives better.

Over time, I’ve realized that we often chase dreams that aren’t really about the things themselves but about the emotions we associate with them. We believe we want wealth, luxury, or status, but in reality, we seek security, freedom, and fulfillment.

That day on the beach, I thought I wanted a yacht. Today, I understand that what I truly wanted was peace of mind.

And I have it now.

Maybe the real measure of success is not in the things we can buy, but in the realization that we no longer feel the need to.
